The 50A 4 wire two phase receptical suitable for charging
an electic vehicle is NEMA 14-50R.  It is also possible to use
a surface mount box but it would not be any easier or better.
The surface mount box, 449-129, could be used to make an extension cord but
Menards 3706505 $132.24 or conntek.com 8 83943 01078 3 with molded 
on connectors would be better.  The extension cord wouldbe useful at your
LincolnWay barn.

The 14-50R could be installed in a box, e.g. HomeDepot 264-103, anchored to one of the

Make shure the boxes are deep enough and that the holes can line up by 
spacing the box away from the stud with the right thickness wood spacer.
