For robust systems it is desirable to have multiple ways to
accomplish things.  The system should be fault tolerant especially
if peoples' livelyhood is dependent on the system.  The arbitraryness
of there being only one right way to do something will lead to
trouble, especially if it is done by memory only.

Proprietary systems should be avoided since they can introduce
single point failures.  Also your data and work can become captive
to a rogue entity.
